14 Dead, 30 Injured in Malaha Junction Accident

At least 14 people have lost their lives while 30 others sustained injuries following a tragic road accident at Malaha junction along the Kitale–Webuye highway in Bungoma County.

The accident occurred after a long-distance trailer allegedly lost control and rammed into several vehicles and pedestrians.

According to police and eyewitnesses, the crash happened at about 2 a.m. on Tuesday. The trailer, which was heading from Kitale towards Webuye, reportedly veered off the road and struck private cars and motorcycles that had been parked by the roadside.

Some of the victims included boda boda riders who were waiting along the highway.

Preliminary reports indicate that the incident may have started with a head-on collision between two motorcycles, which drew a crowd to the scene.

Moments later, the trailer crashed into the gathered bystanders, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries.

Police believe the trailer driver fled the scene immediately after the accident.

Webuye East Sub-County Police Commander Rosemary Odeke confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the crash and verify the total number of casualties.

She also urged motorists to exercise extra caution on the roads, particularly at night, as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Those injured were taken to Webuye County Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were moved to the hospital’s mortuary awaiting identification and postmortem examinations.
