Young Simba Football Club clinched the Kakamega Governor’s Cup 2023 title by defeating Maroon Commandoes in an intense match, securing a KSh.2 million cash prize for maintaining a clean sheet.
Maroon Commandoes secured the first runners-up position with Sh1.5 million, followed by Buchifi Youth with Sh1 million and Butali with Sh500,000. In the Soccer Girls category, Luandeti Girls emerged victorious, earning Ksh1 million after defeating Duka Queens.
The county government allocated Sh10 million for the Governor’s Cup awards, benefiting boys’ and girls’ soccer teams, netball girls, and volleyball boys and girls. King’s volleyball team claimed the men’s category championship, winning Sh500,000. Namudira Queens and Malava Starlets triumphed in the volleyball girls division, while Shirotsa Girls were crowned netball champions and awarded Sh500,000.
Governor Fernandes Barasa commended the participating teams for their dedication. Former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya advocated for increased funding for youth development given the region’s sizable population.
