Video Evidence Forces NPS to Act in Nandi Scandal

The National Police Service (NPS) has initiated a 72-hour investigation into allegations of serious misconduct involving officers attached to Nandi Hills Police Station in Nandi County.

This action follows the widespread circulation of CCTV footage on social media showing the incident, which preliminary assessments suggest took place on January 10, 2026.

The video shows uniformed police officers entering a pool hall in Nandi Hills town where several young men were playing. The officers allegedly ordered the men to lie down, with footage indicating that some were slapped while others were beaten with batons. The officers reportedly left the scene after about eight minutes.

The incident sparked outrage among local leaders, including Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, who condemned the officers’ actions as a violation of constitutional rights.

In a statement issued on Friday, police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said the NPS was deeply disturbed by the footage and strongly denounced the conduct, describing it as unacceptable in a civilised society.

Nyaga stated that the actions amounted to a clear breach of the National Police Service Act, the police code of conduct, and basic human rights principles.

He added that the Inspector General of Police had personally reviewed the footage and directed the Internal Affairs Unit to conduct a prompt and comprehensive investigation within three days to establish all the facts surrounding the incident.

According to Nyaga, the inquiry will be carried out professionally and in collaboration with independent institutions to ensure transparency and accountability. Any officer found responsible will face appropriate disciplinary action.

The NPS sought to assure the public that the incident was isolated and does not represent the values, training, or standards of the Service. Nyaga emphasized that officers are expected to serve the public with respect, professionalism, and courtesy at all times, warning that misconduct will be dealt with firmly and swiftly.

The Service reaffirmed its commitment to protecting all Kenyans lawfully and fairly and urged anyone with relevant information to assist the investigation by contacting the nearest police station, using the emergency numbers 999, 911, or 112, or submitting tips anonymously through the #FichuaKwaDCI channels.

Earlier, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja had ordered an immediate probe into the alleged assault, instructing the Internal Affairs Unit to investigate possible human rights abuses, misuse of authority, and acts of violence by the officers involved.
