Preliminary findings suggest that one of the students may have stabbed the other to death before taking his own life, although investigators say the motive behind the incident is still unknown.

Family members of one of the deceased, 21-year-old third-year student Dariel Jedidah Luvunga, said they last spoke with him on the evening of March 8, 2026.

Concern grew after their repeated attempts to reach him the next day were unsuccessful. On March 10, relatives went to his residence and found the door locked from the inside.

Police said the family looked through a small opening and noticed someone lying motionless on the floor, prompting them to contact authorities.

Officers arrived at the scene and forced the door open, where they found two bodies inside the house. One man was lying on the floor with multiple stab wounds to the head and abdomen, while the other was discovered hanging in the bathroom.

Authorities confirmed that the body found hanging was Dariel. A blood-stained kitchen knife, believed to be the weapon used in the attack, was recovered from the scene. Police also noted that no suicide note was found.

The bodies were taken to the Kakamega General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations as investigations continue.

The incident attracted a large crowd of residents who gathered near the house as police removed the bodies.

Police have urged members of the public to remain alert and report suspicious activities as detectives work to determine what led to the tragedy.
