Two individuals lost their lives on Friday after a private jet experienced engine failure and crashed onto a highway in Florida, according to authorities.
The Federal Aviation Administration reported that the Bombardier Challenger 600, carrying five individuals, went down around 3:15 pm (2015 GMT) on Interstate 75 near Naples.
Just moments before the scheduled landing at Naples Municipal Airport, the pilot radioed air traffic control to report the loss of both engines and requested an emergency landing, stated airport spokesperson Robin King.
Facing the urgency of the situation, the air traffic controller swiftly granted clearance for an emergency landing on the highway after the pilot expressed inability to reach the runway.
While three individuals survived the crash, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the two fatalities occurred upon impact.
It remains unclear whether the plane collided with any vehicles on the highway. Visuals aired by local media depicted the charred remains of the aircraft, emitting dense black smoke.
The flight had originated from Ohio State University Airport, as confirmed by King.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will spearhead the investigation into the incident.
