Super Metro Driver, Conductor Arrested After Deadly Highway Incident

A matatu driver and conductor have been arrested after a passenger died following a fall from their vehicle along the Nairobi–Namanga Highway in Athi River.

The victim, identified as 25-year-old Joseph Mureithi, was reportedly thrown out of the moving matatu on Tuesday night shortly after boarding. His family and witnesses allege that after he was ejected, the same vehicle ran over him and sped off, leaving him critically injured by the roadside.

He later succumbed to his injuries. Mureithi worked as a petrol station attendant in the area.

According to witnesses, the incident occurred at around 11 p.m. after Mureithi had finished work and boarded a Nairobi-bound matatu from Kitengela near Shalom Hospital. They claim there was a brief disagreement between him and the conductor, as the vehicle was already full, before he was allegedly pushed out.

However, the crew told police that the victim lost his footing while attempting to board and fell.

Officers who were nearby responded after being alerted and pursued the vehicle to Mlolongo, where it was intercepted with the help of boda boda riders. The matatu was later towed to Athi River Police Station, and the driver and conductor remain in custody as investigations continue.

An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday, with detectives urging anyone with information to come forward.
