Authorities have arrested a technician accused of interfering with the CCTV system at Nairobi’s Central Police Station following the death of influencer Albert Ojwang.

The technician was arrested on Friday during a police operation and is said to have received KSh 3,000 to tamper with surveillance footage related to the incident.
He becomes the second individual arrested as investigations continue, with at least four more suspects, including the station’s OCS, still being sought. The OCS has reportedly gone into hiding.
According to police, the technician was asked to delete footage from June 6 and 7—dates surrounding Ojwang’s detention and death at the station. He told investigators that he had initially installed the CCTV system at the station in 2024, setting up 25 cameras and a DVR capable of storing footage for up to 30 days, as per the then-OCS’s instructions.
The technician recounted that on the morning of June 8, 2025, a female officer summoned him to the OCS office, where he was instructed to erase footage from specific dates. He explained that such selective deletion wasn’t possible and that only a full system format—which he says he executed—could remove all stored data. Afterward, the OCS allegedly paid him KSh 3,000.
Later that day, the female officer attempted to call him again, and on June 9, asked him to return with a new hard drive for replacement. However, upon arrival, he found that the DVR system had already been tampered with. She also told him not to wear any reflective gear that could identify him as a technician.
Although an officer from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) later contacted him to help retrieve the CCTV footage, he sent a colleague in his place, citing concern over the suspicious circumstances and growing public attention.
Ojwang died on the night of June 7, allegedly after being beaten at the police station. He had earlier been arrested in Homa Bay over a post made on social media platform X. A constable has already been arrested in connection with the case.
Public outrage continues to grow, with protests erupting on Thursday demanding justice for Ojwang. The demonstrations turned chaotic, with police clashing with protesters. The case is still under active investigation.
