Authorities at Ekerenyo station in Nyamira County are probing an incident wherein a 6-year-old child passed away and five family members (parents and siblings) fell ill with stomach discomforts after reportedly ingesting poisonous cassava.
As per police documentation, the family, comprised of parents and four children aged 16, 12, 8, and 6, had consumed the cassava for lunch. Later in the evening, they began experiencing abdominal pains, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Their neighbors rushed them to Ekerenyo Hospital, where they received initial medical care before being transferred to Nyamira General Hospital for further treatment.
At Nyamira Hospital, the youngest child, Shadrack Mosigisi, succumbed to complications arising from the poisoning. The parents and one child were treated and discharged, while another child remained in critical condition due to the toxin’s effects.
Law enforcement officers visited the family’s residence, collecting samples of both cooked and uncooked cassava for further analysis and investigation.
