New Sh17M Dam Brings Hope to Thirsty Kitui Villagers

The Tanathi Water Works Development Agency (TWWDA) has reaffirmed its commitment to providing reliable water access to residents of the Lower Eastern region and Kajiado for domestic, irrigation, and livestock use.

Chairperson Regina Ndambuki said the agency has developed a comprehensive strategy to mitigate the devastating livestock losses witnessed during recurring droughts in the region.

“Livestock is the backbone of the economy in Kajiado and parts of Lower Eastern. When animals die due to water scarcity, families lose their main source of livelihood. As Tanathi, we are committed to changing that,” she stated.

Ndambuki spoke while leading the TWWDA board on an inspection of the Sh17 million Kaya Earth Dam project in Kyuso Ward, Kitui County. Once completed, the dam will benefit at least 150 households.

She reiterated the agency’s support for President William Ruto’s agenda of expanding water access to marginalized areas under the Bottom-Up Transformational Agenda (BETA).

“We are implementing water projects in remote areas like Kaya to make clean, reliable water accessible to every household,” she added, noting that the Kaya Dam project is already 60 percent complete and progressing well.

Residents welcomed the development with optimism. Rebecca Kyambi, whose late husband donated the land for the dam, said the project will ease years of hardship caused by water scarcity.

The state of the excavation works at the Kaya Earth Dam in Kyuso Ward, Kitui County.

“For years, we have walked several kilometers in search of water. This project will save time, reduce domestic conflicts, and improve our livelihoods,” she said.

Community leader Daniel Katee praised the initiative as a fitting tribute to Musili Mwangangi, the land donor.

“The Kaya Dam is a dream realized for our people — and a lasting legacy to the Mwangangi family’s generosity,” he said.
