Speaking during Labour Day celebrations at Uhuru Gardens, President Ruto emphasized the urgent need to address Nairobi’s deteriorating infrastructure and unsanitary conditions, calling for swift, coordinated efforts.
“Nairobi is the face of our nation, and we must ensure it reflects dignity,” he said. “We are working with the Nairobi County Government to complete all link roads and create walkable streets. We’ve also agreed on measures to clean up the city.”
His comments came in response to criticism from Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU-K) Secretary General Francis Atwoli, who blamed Nairobi County for mismanagement that has led to widespread filth and urban decay.
Atwoli slammed county leaders for neglecting basic services while continuing to collect taxes, and he appealed to President Ruto for intervention.
“We can’t continue living in a filthy city overrun by hawkers and chaos,” Atwoli said. “Arriving from the airport to see streets filled with hawkers paints a grim picture of poverty. The national and county governments must work together to restore Nairobi’s lost prestige.”
President Ruto also reiterated his administration’s broader efforts to improve urban living through the Affordable Housing Programme, aimed at eliminating slum conditions. He further noted ongoing efforts to expand and modernize schools in underserved and densely populated areas to ensure equitable access to education.
