Nairobi Waitress Charged with Stealing Sh215K from M-Pesa After Night Out

A waitress in Nairobi has been accused of stealing Sh215,000 from a man’s M-Pesa account after a night of partying in Tassia, Embakasi.

Agnes Mueni Angina appeared before the Makadara Law Courts, where she was charged with theft under Section 268(1)(a) and Section 275 of the Penal Code.

According to court documents, the incident occurred on the night of May 17 after Fredrick Ochieng — popularly known as Obama — spent the evening drinking with Angina and her friend at a local club.

Despite a previous fallout over alleged romantic tensions, Ochieng invited her out, and they later agreed to spend the night together, with Ochieng offering Sh5,000.

The prosecution alleges that Ochieng, under the influence of alcohol, gave Angina his phone to process the payment. Instead, she is accused of secretly transferring Sh100,000 to her personal M-Pesa account — and later siphoning off a total of Sh215,000 while he slept.

Ochieng reported the matter to police after discovering the funds missing. The case has sparked wider concerns over mobile money security and digital fraud in nightlife environments.

Angina pleaded not guilty and was released on a Sh100,000 bond or Sh70,000 cash bail. The matter will be mentioned on August 28 ahead of pre-trial and hearing.
