Mwaura: Sh5.05 Billion Already Paid, More Funds Coming for NHIF Debt

The government has announced that it will soon clear the outstanding debts owed to faith-based hospitals.

Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura confirmed in a statement that Sh938 million has already been released to these health facilities, with an additional Sh2.5 billion expected to be distributed in the coming days.

Mwaura emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the long-standing National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) debt, which is estimated at Sh19 billion, owed to healthcare providers nationwide.

“The Government is actively working to resolve the historical NHIF debts, including the Kshs. 19 billion owed to healthcare providers,” the statement noted.

“To date, Ksh 5.05 billion has been disbursed, with Ksh 938 million already paid to faith-based hospitals. An additional Sh2.5 billion is set to be distributed in the coming days.”

Mwaura’s comments come after criticism from the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), who have raised concerns about the government’s failure to settle Sh3 billion in arrears owed to faith-based health facilities. The bishops noted that this amount is linked to debts from the defunct NHIF.

Catholic Church leaders have repeatedly urged the government to settle these outstanding payments, recognizing the vital role faith-based hospitals play in providing healthcare to vulnerable communities across Kenya.
