Moses Kuria Backs Raila for AU Commission Chair

CS Kuria commented on Raila Odinga’s bid for the leadership of the African Union Commission, expressing his admiration and belief that Raila’s potential chairmanship would bring about significant change to Africa.

Kuria described Raila as a person of remarkable character and a close ally. He remarked that with Raila at the helm of the AU, the continent would undergo transformation.

Kuria’s statements followed Raila’s public declaration of his readiness to lead the African continent if called upon. Raila asserted his suitability for the position, expressing willingness to serve the continent. This declaration coincided with the AU Executive Council’s ordinary session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi is expected to rally support for Raila’s candidacy.

In order for Raila to be considered for the position of AU Commission chairman, he must be endorsed by a member state, with President Ruto’s administration likely to advocate for Raila’s candidacy. Additionally, Raila received backing from former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who highlighted Raila’s experience in government leadership and urged East African countries to unite behind a single candidate.

Raila aims to succeed Moussa Faki of Chad, whose second and final four-year term ends next year, following his election on January 30, 2017.
