Richard Otieno, a Molo activist, died from severe head injuries caused by a sharp object, according to Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor.
Otieno was attacked and killed outside his home in Elburgon, Nakuru County, on the night of Saturday, January 18, by unidentified assailants.

Dr. Oduor stated that the weapon likely used to inflict the injuries was either an axe or a machete. “There were numerous severe injuries, including multiple gashes to the back of the head, which led to a skull fracture and significant brain bleeding,” he said after performing the autopsy on Friday at the Kericho County Level Five Hospital mortuary. “There were also slash wounds on the front of the skull, but these did not cause fractures,” he added.
Known for his vocal criticism of the government, Otieno was widely referred to as the “Molo President.” He was murdered two days after reporting threats and stating that he was being followed by three unknown individuals.

The activist’s body was discovered near his home, just a few meters from the Elburgon police station. Dr. Oduor confirmed that samples were taken from Otieno’s body for further analysis. “When two people engage in a violent confrontation, they often exchange DNA. The samples will help identify the attackers. We also collected fingernail samples to check if Otieno was subdued by any substances before being attacked,” he explained.
Detectives from the DCI’s Homicide Department are investigating the case to identify the perpetrators. Otieno’s family, who attended the autopsy, has called for justice for their loved one.
The postmortem was also attended by Otieno’s family lawyer and officials from the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR). “We have reviewed the autopsy findings and agree with the chief pathologist’s report. This is a critical part of the investigation,” said Kamanda Mucheke, KNCHR’s Head of Complaints and Investigations.
Otieno’s tragic death occurred outside his gate as he returned home after watching an English Premier League match, where unknown attackers brutally assaulted him.
