On Monday, shock and disbelief swept through Matinyani Boys Secondary School in Kitui West sub-county, Kitui, as the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) decided to withhold the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examinations (KCSE) results for the school.
In the previous year, the school had emerged as the top-performing institution in the Eastern region for KCSE, achieving a minimum grade of B+ and a minimum score of 9.94. This stellar performance surpassed well-established schools like Muthale Girls, St. Charles Lwanga, and Kitui School.
However, the 2023 results brought dismay to teachers, students, and parents as the individual student results, expected to be accessed from the portal, were withheld by KNEC due to allegations of exam cheating.
This development coincides with an ongoing investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) into accusations that the school’s principal, Nelson Mureithi, and his deputy had facilitated examination irregularities among students during the exam period. Both individuals have been summoned for questioning in connection to the alleged misconduct.
