Large Number of People Arrested in US Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants

A massive immigration raid took place in the United States on Sunday, resulting in the arrest of 956 people, the largest number since Donald Trump returned to power, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Several government agencies with new powers to detain undocumented immigrants were involved in the arrests in several cities including Chicago, Newark and Miami.

Since taking office, Trump has implemented 21 executive orders to reform the US immigration system.

In Miami on Sunday, state law enforcement agencies took “several immigration actions,” the city’s Security Investigations said on social media.

This included the ICE Miami field office detaining unauthorized immigrants for various offenses.

An unnamed man told CBS News, the BBC’s US news partner, that ICE took his wife during a Miami arrest this weekend.

“It’s disgusting what they’re doing right now,” he told CBS. “It’s so embarrassing.”

He said his wife was in the process of obtaining citizenship when ICE arrived at his home: “They just came and took her.”
