Kenya Met Warns of Heavy Rains, Floods, and Landslides Starting Thursday

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued an alert warning of heavy rainfall expected across most parts of the country from Thursday, October 23, to Wednesday, October 30.

According to Advisory No. 03/2025, released Wednesday morning, the ongoing rains in the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and Highlands West of the Rift Valley are set to intensify to over 30mm in 24 hours, spreading to the Highlands East of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi) and the South-Eastern Lowlands by Thursday afternoon.

The department said the downpour would continue into parts of the North-Eastern region from October 30, marking the onset of the October–November–December (OND) short rains in many areas, except some sections of the South-Eastern Lowlands and Coastal regions.

KMD classified the advisory as medium-level, meaning there is a moderate probability (33–66%) of the forecasted rainfall occurring.

Counties expected to experience heavy rains include Kisumu, Homa Bay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Narok, and Baringo, among others.

Other regions likely to be affected are Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Turkana, Isiolo, Samburu, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Nyandarua, Laikipia, and Nyeri.

The department has cautioned residents in these areas to prepare for possible floods, landslides, and disruptions associated with the expected heavy downpour.
