Gachagua Urges Gen Z to Turn Online Activism into Votes

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has encouraged young Kenyans, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, to continue holding the government accountable and taking an active role in shaping the country’s future.

Speaking in Kakamega on Sunday, Gachagua praised the youth for their use of social media in addressing societal issues but urged them to take their activism a step further.

“What you are doing on social media is commendable, but it’s not enough,” Gachagua told the young crowd. “You have shown great patriotism and commitment to the country’s welfare through online platforms. Now, I ask you to register as voters and continue the fight for change.”

The former deputy president emphasized that the younger generation holds the key to the nation’s progress and integrity. He expressed confidence that they could resolve the country’s political challenges and bring lasting change. However, Gachagua stressed that social media activism alone would not suffice.

“The real work to improve governance will happen at the ballot box in August 2027,” he continued. “Much as social media activism is powerful, the change we seek will be determined by your participation in the electoral process.”

He further appealed to youth to complete their efforts by voting in the next general election, thus turning their online activism into tangible political action. “The young people, who are the majority, carry the responsibility to set this country on the right path—for us and for themselves,” Gachagua added.

The youth have been active on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok, demanding accountability from the government, especially in the lead-up to the June 2024 anti-government protests. Their online presence has even prompted President William Ruto to engage in direct discussions with the youth via a special meeting on X, addressing the nation’s challenges and future direction.

The influence of the Gen Z movement has already made a significant impact, contributing to the reshuffling of the cabinet, the shelving of the Finance Bill 2024, and the formation of a more inclusive government. These efforts also culminated in a meeting with former President Uhuru Kenyatta, signaling the growing political clout of the youth.
