Gachagua Storms Mbeere North, Claims State Plot to Rig Polls

DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua on Sunday led a strong opposition team in campaigning for their candidate in Mbeere North, alleging that the government is using intimidation tactics and cash handouts to influence the upcoming by-election.

Speaking during a church service in Kanyuambora, Gachagua claimed that state-backed violence has been directed at his supporters, accusing authorities of transporting hired goons to disrupt his rallies.

He also alleged that top government officials were distributing money in villages to sway voters, urging locals to resist efforts to “buy their democratic will.”

“A time will come when I will shut down those ‘hotels’. Our people cannot be bought,” he said.

With the by-election fast approaching, political temperatures in the constituency have risen, with opposing sides trading accusations.

Gachagua argued that winning the Mbeere North seat was not only politically important but also symbolic, saying it would restore dignity and respect to the Embu community.

He took aim at Public Service CS Geoffrey Ruku and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, accusing them of fueling tension in the area.

“I have seen Ruku making noise everywhere. After we send Ruto home, you will return here. Don’t let Ruto and Mbarire use you to incite violence in Mbeere North,” he said.

“You are dancing on the grave of your brother Justin Muturi, who was sacrificed for you to get that Cabinet post. The Governor cannot dictate who the people of Mbeere choose — voters must make their own free choice.”

Gachagua was accompanied by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa, DP party leader Justin Muturi and Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji. The opposition is backing DP’s Newton Karish to fill the seat that fell vacant after Ruku joined the Cabinet.

Karish faces UDA candidate Leonard Muriuki Muthende in the November 27 by-election.

Kalonzo affirmed his support for Karish, saying he even declined requests from Wiper aspirants who sought the ticket.

“There were two people here who wanted to run on a Wiper ticket, but my candidate is Karish,” Kalonzo said.

Earlier in the week, Gachagua accused Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja of failing to curb violence targeting the opposition. In a letter to the IG, he demanded the arrest and prosecution of individuals allegedly involved.

“Despite having evidence, none of the suspects has been arraigned. Ahead of the by-election, they must be arrested, charged and brought before court,” he wrote.

Gachagua added that he would be in Mbeere North from November 16 to 24 to campaign for his preferred candidate, saying he would fully exercise his constitutional rights.
