Finland’s President to Make Historic Visit to Kenya in May

Finnish President Alexander Stubb and his wife, Suzanne Innes-Stubb, are scheduled to make a state visit to Kenya in May, marking 60 years of diplomatic ties between the two nations.

According to the Finnish Embassy in Kenya, this will be Finland’s first-ever presidential visit to Kenya, taking place from May 12 to 14, 2025.

“The visit will begin in Nairobi on Monday, May 12, with a bilateral meeting between President Stubb and President William Ruto,” a statement from President Stubb’s office confirmed.

Their talks will focus on strengthening relations between Finland and Kenya, addressing global challenges affecting Africa and Europe, and enhancing cooperation in multilateral systems.

Following the meeting, President Stubb will take part in a wreath-laying ceremony at Uhuru Gardens.

That evening, President Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto will host a state banquet in honour of the visiting Finnish presidential couple.

During his visit, President Stubb will also meet with local NGO leaders and foreign policy experts to discuss regional issues and social development. He will deliver a lecture on geopolitics and global order transformation at the University of Nairobi, followed by a student engagement session.

In addition, he will give a keynote address at the closing of the EU-Kenya Business Forum and attend a business seminar organized by Business Finland, focusing on the health sector and infrastructure development.

His itinerary also includes a visit to a vocational training institution and a company participating in a Finnish-funded initiative aimed at improving the quality and market relevance of technical education.

President Stubb will also tour Kawangware to observe an EU and Finnfund-supported project that promotes digital connectivity.

He will conclude his Nairobi engagements with meetings involving the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), and the Executive Directors of UNEP and UN-Habitat, where discussions will focus on the UN’s future and multilateralism, along with the strategic role of the Nairobi-based UN offices.

The President will be joined by Finnish Members of Parliament Saara-Sofia Sirén and Inka Hopsu, as well as a business delegation representing various sectors of Finland’s economy.
