Narok County Police Commander Riko Ngare confirmed the incident, revealing that the young victim was a Grade 3 student at Rekero Primary School. Police and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers from the Aitong patrol base visited the scene and transferred the girl’s remains to the Narok County Referral Hospital Mortuary.

In response to the tragedy, local residents have urged the government to take action and contain the wild elephants in designated areas to prevent further fatalities. Emily Kipetu, a local resident, noted that a similar incident occurred the previous day, when a herder was killed by a rogue elephant while tending to livestock.

“We believe there is a rogue elephant in the area that is responsible for these deaths,” Kipetu said. “We urge KWS officers to act before more lives are lost.”

The Maasai Mara Game Reserve is home to about 2,500 elephants, and during the dry season, these animals often wander in search of food and water. Local residents have been advised to stay vigilant when herding, gathering firewood, or working in areas with dense vegetation to avoid encounters with wildlife.

Those affected by human-wildlife conflict are entitled to seek compensation for loss of life, injury, or property damage.
