Thousands of Eldoret residents have gathered at the Eldoret Sports Club for a celebration marking the town’s elevation to city status.
President William Ruto is set to oversee the event, where he will officially present the city charter to Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii.
Attendees are undergoing security checks before entering the venue, and each is being given a loaf of bread and a soda as part of the festivities.
Before heading to the county headquarters for the charter handover, Ruto hosted a breakfast for Kenya’s Olympic team at the Eldoret State Lodge.
He is accompanied by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, several Cabinet Secretaries, and various elected officials from the region and beyond.
Governor Bii expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Everything is going smoothly, and we are thrilled to welcome Kenya’s fifth city.”
