Burkina Faso to Outlaw Homosexuality

Burkina Faso has become the latest country in Africa to outlaw same-sex marriage.

During a cabinet meeting, the military-led government approved a law banning same-sex marriages and similar practices.

The Minister of Law of Burkina Faso Edasso Rodrigue Bayala has said that the new law recognizes traditional and religious marriages only under its civil registry.

The law will now go on to be approved by parliament before being signed by Ibrahim Traore – the revolutionary leader who presided over the cabinet meeting.

The West African nation was among the twenty-two out of fifty-four countries that allowed homosexuality, which is punishable by death or a long prison term in other countries.

Uganda passed one of the world’s toughest anti-LGBTQ laws in May last year.
