Intense clashes are ongoing in central Somalia as al-Shabab militants launched an assault on military bases in the Mudug region.
Witnesses reported hearing heavy gunfire and explosions early on Wednesday, with the attack commencing through a suicide bombing targeting government special forces. Galmudug Security Minister Mohamed Abdi Aden stated that the military is currently engaged in battle with militants in Aad village, where the attacked bases are situated.
The Somali National News Agency (Sonna) indicated that, with local assistance, the army successfully repelled the attack, causing significant losses to the terrorists. However, al-Shabab claims to have seized five military bases and inflicted casualties on numerous soldiers.
Since August 2022, Somali federal forces have been actively pursuing a major offensive against the al-Qaeda-linked group.
