The soldiers lost their lives while fighting Rwandan-backed M23 rebels in the city of Goma.

About 800 troops were reportedly deployed to the area earlier this week, but the SANDF has refused to confirm the reports.

The South African National Defence Union (SAND) said the matter was sensitive because any information would put the lives of soldiers on the ground at risk.

A memorial service for fallen soldiers has been held at the Swartkop air force base in Johannesburg.
