US President Donald Trump has signed an order banning transgender women from competing in women’s sports.
“From now on, women’s sports will be for women only,” Trump said, surrounded by female athletes and girls before signing the order at the White House. “With this order, the war on women’s sports is over.”
According to him, the United States will ban visas for transgender athletes.
The order, which takes effect immediately, provides guidance, regulations and legal interpretations, and will enlist the Department of Education to investigate high schools deemed to be non-compliant.
Republicans say the move restores equality in sports, but LGBT rights advocates and human rights organizations have described it as discriminatory.
An administration official said the order would reverse the Biden administration’s position that in April last year said LGBT students would be protected by federal law, although it did not provide specific guidance for transgender athletes.
President Trump noted that the order would include the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
On Trump’s first day in office on January 20, he signed a separate executive order calling for the federal government to officially define gender as male or female.
