Police in Kericho County have apprehended two individuals suspected to be part of a group responsible for the rape and killing of a woman in Kipsamoi village, Sigowet/Soin sub-county, on Thursday night.
As per junior police officers from Sondu police station, who requested anonymity, the suspects were captured at their hideout following a tipoff from concerned citizens.
Reportedly, the suspects intercepted the woman while she was returning home late at night from a drinking outing. They allegedly dragged her to a nearby field owned by a resident, where they took turns raping her.
After the assault, the suspects purportedly moved the victim to a nearby nappier grass farm close to her residence, where she was subsequently killed. It’s alleged that the intoxicated state of the victim facilitated the identification of the perpetrators.
Following the incident, the suspects fled the scene, but were later apprehended early on Friday and taken into custody at Sondu police station.
Authorities have disclosed ongoing investigations and are pursuing additional leads to apprehend other individuals believed to be involved in the crime.
Family members discovered the victim’s body and promptly notified authorities, prompting a response from police officers who transported the body to Sigowet Sub-county Hospital mortuary.
The detained suspects are expected to be formally charged in court next week.
