Kenyans Feel the Pinch as Inflation Climbs to 6.8%

Kenya’s annual inflation rate increased to 6.8 percent in September, from 6.6 percent in August, largely due to higher prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, transport, as well as housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels.

Data released by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) shows that prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages rose by 9.5 percent in September compared with the same period last year.

Transport costs recorded a 15.6 percent increase over the year, while prices under housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels went up by 3.2 percent.

According to KNBS, the three categories collectively account for more than 57 percent of the total weighting across the 13 main expenditure groups in the Consumer Price Index.

The statistics agency said food and non-alcoholic beverage prices also increased by 0.9 percent between August and September.

During the same period, prices of alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics rose by 0.4 percent, while personal care, social protection and miscellaneous goods and services recorded a 0.2 percent increase.

Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance also registered a 0.2 percent rise in prices during the month.
