Trevor, Mwanahamisi, Letoo, Lulu Hassan Among Journalists Set to Exit Citizen TV

Speculation is rife within Kenya’s media and political circles after reports emerged that journalists and presenters at Royal Media Services intending to join politics ahead of the 2027 General Election have been directed to resign by the end of June.

According to the reports, the directive was issued internally by the RMS management board as the country slowly begins gearing up for the next political season.

While the media giant has not publicly released an official statement on the matter, the move is said to target staff members already associated with political ambitions or active grassroots campaigns.

Among the high-profile media personalities reportedly affected is Trevor Ombija, who is said to have launched campaigns for the Nyakach parliamentary seat. Lulu Hassan has also reportedly been linked to a bid for the Mvita MP seat, while Stephen Letoo is emerging as one of the top contenders for the Kilgoris MP position.

At Citizen TV and its sister stations, other names mentioned include Michael Njenga, who is allegedly eyeing the Kabete MP seat, and Mwanahamisi Hamadi, who is reportedly preparing a run for the Likoni parliamentary seat.

Also said to be considering political bids are Tina Ogal, linked to the Embakasi East MP race, and Nancy Kwamboka Omweri, who is reportedly targeting the Nyamira gubernatorial seat.

The development mirrors a similar scenario witnessed ahead of the 2022 General Election, when RMS reportedly instructed employees seeking elective positions to step down months before the polls. Media organizations often enforce such policies to avoid conflicts of interest and maintain editorial neutrality during politically charged periods.

With the 2027 political landscape already beginning to take shape, the possible exit of some of RMS’s most recognizable faces could significantly reshape both Kenya’s media and political arenas in the coming months.
