IPOA Probes Death at Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi Rally

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has opened an urgent investigation into the death of a man during a political rally led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna in Kitengela on Sunday.

The decision follows growing public concern over how security officers handled the “Linda Mwananchi” tour event, which featured several opposition leaders, including MPs Babu Owino (Embakasi East), Caleb Amisi (Saboti), Siaya Governor James Orengo, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi.

In a statement issued on Monday, IPOA Vice Chairperson Ann Mwangi announced that a rapid response team had been dispatched to Kajiado County to probe the incident.

IPOA said it was deeply troubled by the reported death and injuries that occurred during the rally, allegedly as National Police Service officers attempted to control the situation.

Investigators will examine the circumstances surrounding the fatality, which happened as police reportedly sought to disperse the crowd. The inquiry will assess whether the force used by officers was lawful, proportionate, or in breach of constitutional standards.

The deceased has been identified as 28-year-old Vincent Ayomo.

Senator Sifuna condemned the incident, accusing police and alleged hired individuals of using excessive force against peaceful supporters. He insisted the rally was lawful and pledged to seek justice for Ayomo’s family, terming the disruption an attempt to stifle democratic expression.

The National Police Service has stated that officers were deployed to maintain order, though the situation escalated into clashes marked by tear gas and confrontations. IPOA reiterated its concern over the loss of life and injuries sustained.

The oversight body said its findings will be made public and that it will recommend prosecution or disciplinary measures if any officer is found responsible.

IPOA emphasized that the investigation aligns with its constitutional mandate to ensure police accountability and lawful conduct. The authority also conveyed condolences to the victim’s family and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

The incident has renewed debate about police conduct during political gatherings and the safety of civilians attending such events, even as IPOA assured the public of its commitment to transparency, professionalism, and accountability in policing.
