James Mukhongo Barasa, the Member of County Assembly for Chwele Kabuchai ward, has passed away.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula praised Mukhongo’s determination and courage in his battle against cancer.
In his tribute, Wetang’ula described Mukhongo not just as a leader, but also as a brother, a son of the soil, and a friend to many.
The Speaker reflected on knowing Mukhongo long before his political rise, recalling a young man full of dreams, humility, and a deep love for his people.
“I watched him grow, from being nominated as a councillor in 2002 to being elected MCA in 2013, and throughout, he remained unwavering in his service, grounded in his values, and steadfast in his purpose,” Wetang’ula said.
Mukhongo served as the chair of the Finance Committee in the Bungoma County Assembly and was the Ford Kenya Party chairman in Kabuchai, where he led with integrity, loyalty, and a servant’s heart.
Wetang’ula noted that Mukhongo’s advocacy gave a voice to the voiceless, his efforts lifted the vulnerable, and his presence brought hope to many households.
“His death is a great loss not only to his family and the people of Kabuchai but also to all of us who were inspired by his spirit, kindness, and dedication to community empowerment,” the Speaker said.
“On behalf of my family, the National Assembly, the Ford-Kenya Party, and from my own heart, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the people of Chwele/Kabuchai Ward.”
Wetang’ula prayed for comfort for Mukhongo’s loved ones during this difficult time.
“May James’ soul, having fought the good fight and kept the faith, rest in eternal peace with God. Farewell, my brother. Farewell, gallant son of Kabuchai. Your legacy will live on in the lives you touched and the path you paved.”
