Water hyacinth has once again covered a section of Lake Victoria, causing disruptions to boat travel and impacting tourism.
This resurgence of the weed, the first occurrence since 2018, has prompted stakeholders to urgently call on the government to intervene before the situation escalates. Prominent establishments affected by the water hyacinth infestation include Dunga Beach, Hill Camp, Hideout Resort, Milimani Beach Resort, Kisumu Gold Club, Yacht Club, Le Pearl, Locco Beach, Bingo Beach, and Hippo Point Public Beach.
Even government facilities such as the Port of Kisumu, Kenya Shipyards Limited (KSL), and Kenya Pipeline Corporation (KPC) oil jetty have not been spared. Operators at Dunga Beach are particularly feeling the impact, reporting a significant drop in visitors due to the challenging lake conditions.
Additionally, fishermen have experienced reduced harvests during the festive season, resulting in an increase in fish prices. Swift government action is urgently needed to address this situation.
