Why Juja MP Koimburi Was Arrested by DCI

Juja MP George Koimburi was reportedly arrested by the police on Tuesday as part of an investigation into statements he made.

The MP was allegedly detained outside his home on Tuesday morning and taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters for questioning. It is said that he was arrested shortly after leaving his residence on Kenyatta Road in Juja.

The arrest followed Koimburi’s controversial remarks, where he claimed the government had spent approximately Sh13 billion on campaigning for Raila Odinga in the African Union Commission (AUC) elections.

Before his arrest, Koimburi reportedly noted the presence of two Subaru vehicles parked outside his house.

A strong critic of the government, Koimburi had raised concerns about the alleged campaign spending, intensifying political debate.

The charge and cautionary statement mentioned that the statements made by Koimburi on February 16, 2025, at PCEA Juja Farm parish were knowingly false and intended to incite unrest, which would amount to incitement against the government.

A group of leaders and supporters accompanied Koimburi to the DCI headquarters.

Koimburi’s lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, defended his client, arguing that there was nothing wrong with holding the government accountable for the supposed AUC chairperson election expenditure.

“I am at the DCI HQ representing Hon. Koimburi, who has been arrested for stating the obvious—that Sh13 billion was spent on Raila’s AUC chair mission. What’s wrong with calling him to account? Is it that the truth hurts?” he tweeted.
