The blackout will begin at 3:00 p.m. (1300 GMT) on May 7 and remain in effect until a new pope is elected, according to the office of the Governorate of Vatican City State.

This measure, however, will not affect St. Peter’s Square, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni clarified. The square is expected to host thousands of worshippers awaiting the announcement of Pope Francis’ successor. Pope Francis passed away on April 21.

A total of 133 cardinals from around the world will assemble in the Sistine Chapel on Wednesday to begin the secretive voting process. To ensure confidentiality, the cardinals must surrender their mobile phones before entering the conclave.
