Raila Odinga Demands Withdrawal of Finance Bill Amid Protests

Raila Odinga has strongly criticized the government for the violent crackdown on demonstrators protesting against the Finance Bill, urging immediate withdrawal of the legislation.

In a statement dated June 25, 2024, Raila condemned the police for killing peaceful protesters exercising their democratic rights.

Expressing deep concern over the fatalities and arrests, Raila emphasized the need for the government to revoke the Finance Bill without conditions to pave the way for dialogue.

He denounced the use of excessive force against Kenyan youth and lamented the breakdown of constitutional norms.

Raila highlighted the heavy toll of government inflexibility, regretting the escalation of tensions that could have been resolved through dialogue.

He criticized the government’s dismissal of dissenting views and called for an end to brutality against demonstrators demanding better economic conditions and opportunities.

Raila stressed that Kenya cannot afford to silence its youth with violence, underscoring the profound grievances underlying the protests, with the Finance Bill serving as a catalyst rather than a critical issue.
