President Ruto Fires Irungu Nyakera as KICC Board Chair

President William Ruto has appointed Samuel Waweri Mwangi as the new Chairperson of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) Board of Directors.

This appointment, effective immediately under Section 43 (1) (a) of the Tourism Act, will span a period of three years starting from April 1, 2025.

The announcement also confirmed the termination of Irungu Nyakera’s previous appointment, bringing it to an end.

This change marks a shift in leadership at KICC, a key facility for both Kenya’s tourism and business sectors.

Nyakera, who was appointed to the position last year, had vowed to position KICC as a leading hub for conference tourism. During his tour with CEO James Mwaura in August, he highlighted his intention to enhance KICC’s role in Kenya’s tourism industry and improve its competitiveness in the global Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) market. He envisioned making KICC a competitor to regional destinations like Kigali and Cape Town.

In reaction to the gazette notice, Nyakera expressed on X, “I feel special to be fired through a special issue. They couldn’t wait for Friday.”
