A police operation to recover a stolen bicycle in Mbeere South Subcounty, Embu County, ended in tragedy after officers reportedly came under attack from a group of youths on Saturday night.
According to police, officers tracked a suspect to a rented house at Mutuobare Shopping Centre, where they found the stolen bicycle parked outside the locked residence. The suspect allegedly ignored repeated requests by officers to open the door.

Police said the situation escalated when about 10 youths, allegedly armed with pangas and stones, confronted the officers. One officer reportedly fired four warning shots into the air, but the group continued advancing.
The officer then discharged his firearm, fatally shooting Geofrey Murimi, who sustained a gunshot wound to the left side of the chest. The bullet exited through his back.
The bicycle theft suspect was also shot during the incident, suffering a gunshot wound to the left shoulder. He was initially treated at Kiambere Medical Clinic before being transferred to Embu Level V Hospital, where he was admitted in stable condition.
Police said a search of the suspect’s house led to the recovery of approximately 600 grams of cannabis, a blood-stained panga, a blood-stained Maasai sword, four packets of rolling papers, a rolling mat and a pair of scissors.
Murimi’s body was taken to Embu Level V Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination. Investigations into both the shooting and the alleged bicycle theft are ongoing.
Police noted that crime has been on the rise in the area, prompting intensified security operations that have resulted in the arrest of several suspects, with some cases already before the courts.
Man killed by arrow in Lamu
In a separate incident, police have launched investigations into the killing of a 35-year-old man who was shot with an arrow outside his home in Lamu West Subcounty.
The victim, identified as Paul Mwangi Kimani, was attacked on Saturday evening at around 7 p.m. in Zebra B Village, Lamu County.
According to police, a woman who was inside the house preparing a meal said Kimani had been seated outside when he suddenly ran into the house clutching the left side of his chest before collapsing in his bedroom.
Neighbours responded after she raised the alarm and found an arrow lodged in the left side of his chest. He died from excessive bleeding before receiving medical assistance.
Police visited the scene, recovered the arrow believed to have been used in the attack, documented the scene and moved the body to Mpeketoni Subcounty Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
Investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those responsible.
