The United Opposition has criticised President William Ruto for ignoring concerns raised by the Church regarding his style of governance, arguing that clergy voices reflect the sentiments of ordinary Kenyans.
Opposition leaders Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa and Fred Matiang’i praised religious leaders for boldly calling out the government, comparing President Ruto’s leadership approach to that of Pharaoh in the Bible.

Speaking during the ordination of Rev. Dorcas Rigathi at her Wamunyoro home in Nyeri, the leaders asked for prayers for the nation as they condemned what they described as the President’s heavy-handed leadership.
“I have seen statements from the Anglican Bishop of Kisumu, from the Catholic bishops—they have spoken. Does it not remind you of Pharaoh, who refused to free the Israelites from captivity?” Kalonzo posed.
Matiang’i added: “Please listen to the clergy. They are voicing the pain, hopes and concerns of our people.”
Although the event discouraged political speeches, those who spoke accused the President of pushing policies that hurt ordinary Kenyans while praising religious leaders for challenging him.
“When you are called to be the President of Kenya and occupy the highest office in the land, you must carry that responsibility with honour and dignity,” Wamalwa said.
Matiang’i continued: “History has shown what happens to nations that ignore their ordained spiritual leaders. You are the voice of God and the conscience of this country. Our national leaders must listen to that voice.”
Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti added: “Kanisa mtuombee. We need your prayers. We don’t want angels this time—tunataka Mungu akuje mwenyewe.”
Rev. Dorcas was honoured for her work uplifting widows, the boychild and vulnerable families, and for standing by her husband during his political challenges.
Her husband, opposition co-principal Rigathi Gachagua, expressed gratitude: “My family and I are thankful people. We remember acts of kindness. And if in future you ever need our support, we will be there.”
