MP Says Ban Aims to Silence Anti-Femicide Calls

Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has condemned her suspension from the National Assembly, claiming it is a deliberate attempt to silence her persistent calls for urgent action against rising femicide cases in Kenya.

On Wednesday, August 13, 2025, Speaker Moses Wetang’ula imposed a 20-day suspension on Wamuchomba following her protest in Parliament. She had confronted Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen over what she described as the slow pace of investigations into the July 2024 Kware dumpsite murders in Nairobi, where several women’s bodies were discovered.

According to Wamuchomba, more than a year later, the DCI has only been able to identify a handful of victims. She also pointed out that the prime suspect, Collin Jumiasi, escaped from police custody in August 2024 and remains at large, with no meaningful updates from authorities.

She further criticised CS Murkomen for dismissing the BBC Africa Eye documentary Madams: Exposing Kenya’s Child Sex Trade, saying such remarks downplay systemic threats facing women.

Wamuchomba argued that Speaker Wetang’ula’s action against her, rather than holding Murkomen accountable for failing in his security mandate, perpetuates disregard for women’s safety. She insisted her protest aimed to pressure the Executive and investigative agencies to arrest suspects and speed up prosecutions.

Calling the move punitive and politically motivated, the MP maintained that it was part of a wider attempt to stifle debate on femicide in Parliament.

Wamuchomba has invited the media to a briefing at Utalii Hotel, Nairobi, on Friday, August 15, 2025, where she is expected to address the matter further.

In his ruling, Wetang’ula said her conduct amounted to “contempt in the face of the court, not just contempt of court,” citing Standing Order 107(a) alongside (i)(a) and (iii). During the suspension, she will be barred from entering Parliament’s precincts or using any of its facilities, including restaurants, gym, and offices.
