Facebook parent company Meta is set to lay off about 600 employees from its artificial intelligence (AI) division as part of efforts to streamline operations following a period of rapid hiring, several U.S. media outlets reported on Wednesday.
According to reports by the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, the layoffs will not affect TBD Lab, an advanced AI research unit founded by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, which grew quickly after attracting top talent from competitors such as OpenAI and Apple with lucrative offers.
Instead, the job cuts will impact teams working on AI products and infrastructure, with the goal of improving efficiency while maintaining progress on Meta’s key AI initiatives. The Wall Street Journal noted that some of the affected employees may be reassigned within the company.
The New York Times said the move was intended to reduce “organizational bloat” that resulted from Meta’s aggressive AI hiring spree.
In a memo cited by both outlets, Meta’s Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang said the restructuring would allow for faster decision-making, noting that “fewer conversations will be required to make a decision.”
Meta has not yet issued an official comment on the reported layoffs.
