Kirinyaga: Woman Commits Suicide Days After Husband’s Burial

Residents of Kirinyaga County have expressed alarm over a perceived rise in suicide cases following the death of a middle-aged woman in Kerugoya town.

The woman reportedly died on Sunday night at her rented house in Kerugoya town, Kirinyaga Central Sub-county, just a week after her husband was laid to rest.

The deceased, identified as Jackline Njeri, was a trader at Kerugoya Market and well known among fellow traders. Local residents, including Sophia Wanjiru and Purity Muthoni, said the incident came as a shock to the community.

“We closed the market last week to attend her husband’s burial. This week, we were alerted that Jackline had passed on,” Wanjiru said.

Muthoni described the loss as deeply painful, noting that Jackline was a mother of one and did not leave behind any message.

“As traders, we are heartbroken. We buried her husband last week, and now we must once again come together to give Jackline a dignified farewell,” she said.

On December 23, 2025, business at Kerugoya Market came to a standstill as more than 400 traders closed their stalls to attend the burial of her husband, Robert Migwi. The traders also held a peaceful procession through Kerugoya town in his honour.

Patrick Gathaku, another trader, said prayers were held at the market before Migwi’s body was escorted to Kandongu Village in Mwea West Sub-county, where he was buried.
