Inside the Story of the Premier League Trophy

Every May, as the English Premier League (EPL) season reaches its thrilling finale, all attention turns to one glittering prize — the Premier League trophy.

For clubs, players, and millions of fans worldwide, it represents months of hard work, passion, and unforgettable moments — the ultimate reward where dreams are fulfilled and heroes are made.

Beyond its shine and prestige, the trophy embodies the tradition, artistry, and pride of English football.

Standing 76 centimetres tall and weighing about 25 kilograms, the Premier League trophy is a masterpiece of British design crafted by luxury jeweller Asprey London, the same creators behind the FA Cup and Rugby World Cup trophies.

Its design carries deep symbolism. Inspired by the “Three Lions” emblem of English football, two lions form the handles, while the third appears when the captain lifts it high in triumph. The golden crown atop signifies authority, while its green malachite base reflects the color of the pitch.

Interestingly, there are two identical Premier League trophies. One stays with the defending champions, and the other is used for official events or as backup on the final matchday when the title race remains undecided.

When two teams are vying for the title, both trophies travel to different venues so the rightful champions can celebrate immediately after the final whistle. The winning club’s name is later engraved on the silver base, marking its place in football history.

Each title-winning team also receives 40 medals distributed among players, coaches, and staff, with players needing at least five appearances to qualify.

Since 1992, only seven clubs have lifted the coveted silverware: Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City, and Liverpool — with Manchester United leading the tally with 13 titles.

In recent years, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City has dominated, ushering in a new tactical era in English football.

Trophy Comes to Kenya

Kenyan fans will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the Premier League trophy up close during the Guinness Matchday Weekend on October 25–26 at Bar Next Door, Kiambu Road.

The two-day event, hosted by Guinness — the official beer of the Premier League — will feature live match screenings, fan zones, football analysis by the Guinness Matchday Committee, and a chance for fans to take photos with the iconic trophy.

“We’re dedicated to giving our consumers world-class football experiences,” said Joy Murugi, Guinness Brand Manager. “The trophy’s presence celebrates the passion of Kenyan fans who have been integral to the Premier League’s global following.”

According to Google Workspace Sports Analytics (2024), Kenya ranks second in Africa for EPL viewership at 86%, just behind Mauritius (91%), highlighting the country’s deep love for English football.

For millions of fans, the Premier League trophy stands for excellence, resilience, and the shared language of the beautiful game. As captains lift it skyward each May, it signifies more than victory — it’s a timeless symbol of footballing immortality.
