The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has regained control of its X and Facebook accounts after they were taken over by hackers in a recent cyber-attack.

This attack on the DCI’s accounts is part of a growing trend of cyber incidents targeting high-profile social media accounts in recent weeks.

On Sunday, the DCI’s pages posted content related to cryptocurrency and blockchain scams, which raised alarms and indicated the accounts were being controlled by hackers.

However, in a prompt response, the DCI successfully regained control of the accounts and issued a statement addressing the breach.

“For a brief period this evening, we experienced a cyber-attack on our digital platforms (X and Facebook), but we have now regained full control,” the DCI stated.

Following the incident, the DCI urged Kenyans to ignore the fraudulent messages related to cryptocurrency and blockchain, labeling them as fake.

The DCI also emphasized that they have intensified their investigation into the attack and will hold those responsible accountable.

“Please note that the information posted is FAKE and not from the DCI. A thorough investigation is underway to apprehend the culprits,” the DCI added.

This hacking incident follows a similar attack on Kenya Broadcasting Channel (KBC) just a week earlier, when their X account was taken over by hackers who renamed it “Deepseek AI.”

“KBC Channel 1’s X account was compromised, and we are actively working to restore access. We apologize for any inconvenience and advise caution when engaging with recent posts,” KBC announced.

They have since regained access to their account.

K24 TV also fell victim to a cyber-attack last week, during which their account was renamed several times. While the page has now been restored to its original name, previous posts were deleted, and the profile picture has not yet been updated to its previous state.
