The service, offered free of charge, automatically detects and flags suspicious messages, alerting customers instantly.

Utilizing AI algorithms, the system evaluates over 250 indicators—including sender behavior, message volume, and geographic trends—to identify potential spam.

Flagged messages are clearly labeled on users’ devices to help them recognize possible scams or threats.

Airtel reports the system handles more than 18 million SMS messages daily, with each analysis completed in under two milliseconds.

It also includes a URL filtering feature that alerts users when SMS messages contain harmful or blacklisted web links.

This initiative comes amid rising concerns over mobile-related fraud in Kenya, where widespread phone use has increased exposure to scams.

Many mobile users frequently report receiving misleading promotions or phishing messages attempting to extract personal data.

Previously, users mainly relied on third-party apps or manual message blocking to deal with unwanted texts.

Airtel’s new solution is part of a broader industry trend toward incorporating AI in telecom security and represents a move to embed protection at the network level rather than leaving it up to individual users.
