Fearful John Matara alleges being assaulted while in police custody.

John Matara, the suspect in the murder case involving socialite Starlet Wahu, is set to remain in custody for another seven days following a court order issued by Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti of the Makadara Law Courts.

The extension was sought by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to finalize investigations. Sergeant Alex Chokera, the investigating officer, informed the court that although the investigation file had been submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), further investigation was required in certain areas as indicated by the ODPP.

Matara, who had already spent 21 days in custody, had his detention extended to allow for completion of investigations before formal charges could be filed.

During the court proceedings, Matara’s lawyer, Samuel Ayora, raised concerns about his client’s safety, alleging that Matara had been physically assaulted by an unidentified individual while in police custody. Ayora also criticized the lack of transparency regarding the incomplete areas of investigation.

Despite objections from Matara’s legal representative, the court granted the extension orders and advised reporting the alleged assault to the police for investigation.

Matara was apprehended at Mbagathi Hospital in Nairobi while receiving treatment for a stab wound, suggesting a possible act of self-defense by Wahu.
