All had dual citizenship, and their identities have been withheld at the request of their families, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly told reporters Wednesday.

He condemned the killings as “irreversible and incompatible with basic human dignity”, adding that he “personally apologized”.

A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Canada said the evidence of the Canadian citizens’ crimes was “solid and sufficient” and urged Canada to “stop making irresponsible statements”, according to the report.

The Chinese embassy also added that Beijing “fully guarantees the rights and interests of the Canadian citizens concerned” and urged the Canadian government to respect “the independence of China’s judiciary”.

China does not recognize dual citizenship and takes a tough stance on drug crimes.
