12 Gold Miners Trapped After Excavation Site Collapse in Kakamega

A search and rescue operation has resumed in c County, where up to 12 gold miners are still trapped after a collapse at an excavation site, according to police.

Shinyalu County Police Commander Daniel Makumbu confirmed that around 20 miners were at the site when it caved in on Monday evening, and eight have been rescued so far.

“The operation is continuing, and we ask the public to stay clear of the area to assist with the efforts and to avoid putting themselves at risk, as the site is unstable,” Makumbu stated.

The collapse occurred just before 7 p.m. on Monday. The Kenya Red Cross has deployed teams to support the rescue efforts.

Mining accidents are frequent in the area, often attributed to inadequate equipment, with previous incidents involving miners suffocating in shafts or dying due to collapsing walls.
