Traders Celebrate Game-Changing Market in Mwingi

The newly completed Kamuwongo ESP Market in Mwingi North has transformed the working conditions of hundreds of small traders who previously operated in an open, unsafe and unhygienic environment.

Costing Sh59.4 million, the modern market now hosts 200 traders and serves over 1,000 people each day. It offers a clean, organised and secure space—replacing the former unfenced market where vendors struggled with weather extremes and poor sanitation.

For long-time vegetable trader Belita Kasyoka, the shift has been life-changing.

“Where we were before, we sat in the scorching sun and rain, surrounded by donkey and cow dung. We were exposed to everything. But here, there is no rain, no dust, no dirt—it’s a good place,” she said.

Belita added that security has greatly improved.

“Before, I had to carry all my goods home every day. Now I can store them safely. I pack what’s left, lock it inside, and go home,” she explained.

With secure storage rooms—including dry and cold rooms—traders no longer worry about daily transport or overnight losses, a stark contrast to the old market where livestock roamed freely and vendors constantly watched over their goods.

The facility also features open trading bays, smart stalls, a mothers’ room, a social hall, an ICT centre, a kitchen and modern sanitation facilities, all designed to promote hygiene and sustainability.

President William Ruto officially handed over the market to the Kitui County Government after inspecting the facility. He was accompanied by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Governor Julius Malombe.

Belita shared a memorable moment from the President’s visit.

“I even joked and told him, ‘My customer, come closer, what do you want to buy?’ He came, greeted me and we talked. I was so happy. I have never in my life come close to a President or shaken hands with one,” she said.

The upgraded market is now expected to stimulate Kamuwongo’s local economy, strengthen small businesses and attract more customers—bringing dignity back to traders who had long endured poor infrastructure.
