Court Gives Aviation Workers and KAA Deadline to End Dispute

The Employment and Labour Relations Court has ordered the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) and the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) to resolve their ongoing labor dispute by Thursday, October 9, 2025, amid warnings of a looming strike.

Justice Onesmus Makau directed both parties to finalize negotiations and present their areas of consensus to the court before filing separate submissions on unresolved matters.

The directive comes after earlier talks collapsed, despite the court’s temporary suspension of a planned strike last week to allow dialogue.

In its strike notice, KAWU Secretary General Moss Ndiema accused the KAA board of incompetence and poor leadership, citing inefficiencies, questionable management decisions — including the controversial Adani lease proposal — and a general “loss of faith” among staff.

The union also protested the transfer of the Ground Flight Safety (GFS) department from KAA to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), saying the move could result in job losses and reduced revenue for the authority.

Other key grievances include the failure to confirm over 500 contract workers to permanent positions, unpaid overtime at Wilson Airport, and a stalled collective bargaining agreement following what the union described as the dismantling of the Human Resources department.

KAWU has maintained that unless the issues are resolved within the set deadline, the union will proceed with industrial action.
