Ruto: Coast Land Disputes Will No Longer Dominate Elections

President William Ruto has assured Coast region residents that long-standing land injustices will no longer be used as a recurring campaign issue in future elections.

Speaking during a thanksgiving service for Youth Affairs and Creative Economy Principal Secretary Fikirini Jacobs in Ganze, Kilifi County, the President said his administration has already rolled out measures to resolve historical land disputes and challenges involving absentee landlords.

Ruto stated that the government had reached a clear plan to address the “big land question” in the region, saying the matter was being actively resolved.

He added that once the interventions are completed, politicians will need to shift to other campaign issues.

The President further said that resolving land problems would boost economic growth in the Coast region by giving residents security of ownership and confidence to invest in their property.

He noted that uncertainty over land ownership has for years hindered development, as many residents have lived as squatters without long-term security.

Ruto emphasized that the government is committed to ending the issue permanently, saying the country has the capacity to solve it once and for all.

He also announced plans to intensify action against absentee landlords, including a program to purchase land from them and redistribute it to local residents within 90 days.

Additionally, the President said the government plans to issue 200,000 title deeds to residents in the Coast region, in addition to the 33,000 already distributed under ongoing reforms.

The event was attended by several senior leaders including Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, Cabinet Secretaries Opiyo Wandayi, Hassan Joho, Salim Mvurya, Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro, and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir.
